Yahoo Mashing Facebook

Yahoo! Mash is a social network service launched by Yahoo! during the early part of September 2007, to compete with other social networking sites by offering "mashups" of existing web services on a single-user interface. The service is currently in 'beta' testing form on an invitation-only basis.

Yahoo! Mash has the unusual feature of allowing a user to edit other users' pages, except in cases where the other users have switched the feature off.

It is thought that the Yahoo! Mash social network was created after plans for a merger of Yahoo! and Facebook failed.

A little more than two months after we first reported rumors about Yahoo’s new social network Mosh, the company has given us a preview of a social network with a slightly different name: Mash

Mash appears to be Yahoo!’s way of saying adieu to its existing social network, Yahoo! 360, but no word yet on whether the company will actually be shutting down 360.

Mash’s blog can be found here

Basically, Yahoo! Mash is similar to MySpace and Facebook where you make a profile page for yourself, but a little different where you can actually edit the pages of your friends (but you can change the settings on whether you want to do this or not.) You can also install "modules," where people can make little applications and you can install them directly on your page. It's similar to applications on Facebook, not so much on MySpace. It's a little buggy right now, but I can't hate on that, since the first week Yahoo! 360 was live was a trainwreck and a half.

The big difference lies in the applications. True, this is a “beta” (as is everything else new on the web now), but you definitely feel like you’ve been spoiled by the never-ending stream of apps on Facebook. Yahoo Mash starts you off with a couple like a questionnaire, page styler, and the slightly creepy “Mash Pet”; there are currently only 10 more for you to add. True, there are some nice ones, such as the blog RSS module so you can feed your blog to your page if you desire, but things like Asteroids and horoscopes just feel a bit tacked-on to increase the quantity of apps.
